Benefits for Patients and Healthcare Providers

For Patients: A midline IV offers a more comfortable and durable option for intravenous therapy, reducing the need for frequent needle sticks and minimizing the risk of complications associated with short peripheral IVs.

For Healthcare Providers: Utilizing midline IVs can improve patient satisfaction, streamline workflows, and reduce the incidence of complications. These procedures also help hospitals reduce central line days and improve throughput, translating into measurable operational benefits.

What Is a Midline IV?

A midline IV is a type of peripheral intravenous catheter inserted into a vein in the upper arm, typically the basilic, brachial, or cephalic veins. The catheter’s tip is positioned just below the shoulder, near the axillary region. Unlike traditional short peripheral IVs, midline IVs can remain in place for a longer duration — typically up to 1-4 weeks — making them ideal for patients requiring extended intravenous therapy. Evidence-based protocols reduce complications and support infection prevention across all care settings.
